  Adult Programs

Ramsey County Library is leading by example with deliberate inclusion of environmental and economical design elements in the Roseville library renovation. The LEED Responsibly series of programs are designed to showcase the Library's features while demonstrating how you can take similar actions at home.

The popular local food Web site, Simple, Good and Tasty (www.simplegoodandtasty.com) , is teaming up with Ramsey County Library to engage, inform and empower the residents of Ramsey County on the issue of good, local, whole foods. Come to one event, or the whole series, to learn about why local food is important to your health and your community.

A new local food system sounds great, so what's the catch? A panel of leaders in the local food movement will discuss organic, local, and sustainable foods - costs, benefits, and controversy - and will also offer tangible ways for everyone to get involved in the local food movement. Speakers include Liz McMann of Mississippi Market Co-op; Mark Muller of Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy; and a St. Paul urban farmer.

Register online to reserve your spot.
You've learned where your food is coming from and how to shop for it, now learn how to take that information and create healthy, delicious meals. Jenny Breen, co-owner of Good Life Catering and longtime chef and nutrition educator, will provide easy, accessible strategies for how to turn good food into great meals.

Limited to 30 people. Register online to reserve your spot.
Gardens of Eagan (an organic farm owned by the Wedge Community Co-op) and its nonprofit educational partner, the Organic Field School, will host a farm tour. See the workings of an organic farm and ask questions about agriculture, and food production and distribution.

These programs are funded with money from the vote of Minnesota residents on November 4, 2008, which dedicated funding to preserve our state's art and cultural heritage.

Consider the book club rewritten. Club Book brings best-selling and award-winning national authors to library communities throughout the metropolitan region. All events are free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served. Doors open 45 minutes in advance of programs and books will be available for sale.

Club Book, a program of Metropolitan Library Service Agency and coordinated by the Library Foundation of Hennepin County, began in April 2010 and will run through June 2011 with events being scheduled in eight library systems throughout the year - presenting approximately 50 free events. For more information about the series, visit the dedicated website (www.clubbook.org) or call 952-847-8107.

Kevin Kling is a storyteller, playwright and regular contributor to NPR's All Things Considered. His plays have been seen at the Guthrie Theater, Second Stage, Seattle Rep, the Goodman Theatre, the Spoleto Festival and the HBO Comedy Arts Festival. Best known for hilarious, often tender stories, Kling has released a number of compact disc collections of his stories. Kevin Kling's first book, The Dog Says How, brought readers into his wonderful world of the skewed and significant mundane. His second book, Holiday Inn, is a romp through a year of holidays and spent weeks on local and national best-seller lists last year.

Colson Whitehead is a prolific author, dynamic speaker, Pulitzer-Prize finalist and Macarthur Fellow. His first novel, The Intuitionist, was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway and a winner of the Quality Paperback Book Club's New Voices Award. John Henry Days, an investigation of the steel-driving man of American folklore, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Los Angeles Times Fiction Award and the Pulitzer Prize. His other award-winning works include The Colossus of New York and Apex Hides the Hurt. His reviews, essays, and fiction have appeared in the New York Times, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Harper's and Granta. His newest work, Sag Harbor (paperback release June 2010), explores the in-between space of adolescence through one boy's summer in a predominantly black Long Island neighborhood.

Swati Avasthi has received numerous writing honors, including a Loft's Mentor Series Award, the University of Minnesota's Thomas Shevlin Fellowship and DeBourg Fellowship. Her short fiction has been nominated for The Best New American Voices and a Pushcart Prize. Split, her acclaimed debut novel, is a powerful and gripping story about a teenaged boy who is thrown out of his house by an abusive father and goes to live with his older brother, who ran away from home years ago to escape the abuse. Prior to writing Split, Avasthi coordinated a domestic violence clinic, where she interviewed thousands of women who were seeking order of protection.

UnReserved: Emerging Arts Station is a partnership between local schools and Ramsey County Library created to promote creativity and art in our neighborhoods. UnReserved provides a sustainable way for young artists to contribute to their community through rotating exhibitions that are peer organized and centralized onto one flat screen television.

In conjunction with UnReserved, Ramsey County Library would like to invite teens to create a new video installation with The BodyCartography Project.

Co-directed by dance and video artists Olive Bieringa and Otto Ramstad, The BodyCartography Project investigates the physical resonance of space in urban, natural, domestic and social landscapes through dance, video and installation work.

Through the lens of the camera, we will lead beginning filmmakers into the world of movement. Together we explore movement and stillness as a focus for the content for our movies. Movement and stillness of the environment, the performers and the camera itself. We will practice the essentials of camera technique and the physical and perceptual techniques that support them.

This program is funded with money from the vote of Minnesota residents on November 4, 2008, which dedicated funding to preserve our state's art and cultural heritage.
